The Children's Mission of St. Paul and St. James
Get Involved
There are many ways to be part of our ministry. We are always grateful for gifts of time, talent, and resources.
You can email us to volunteer, or call us at (203) 785-8248, or write to us at 57 Olive Street, New Haven, CT, 06511. Screening and training are provided for all volunteers.
* Volunteer with Mustardseed Afternoon Club. Get to know our great kids; share snack with them; push a child on the swing; help with homework, read aloud, listen to a child talk about her day; help the staff with projects and cleanup.
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (3:00 to 5:30 pm) when the public schools are open.
Expense: none.
* Put together a supper team at Light and Peace. The supper team prepares and serves supper for our children, staff, and volunteers on Tuesday nights during the school year. You are invited to attend worship with us, are introduced to the children, and recognized for your help at the end of supper. Often, youth groups or other parish organizations will do supper as a team.
Time: Three hours
(5:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday) to set up, serve, and clean up, plus shopping, cooking and travel time.

For details, click here.
Expense: Usually about $100.
* Volunteer for Light and Peace. We welcome caring, patient people to worship alongside the children, help with crafts, and contribute to a calm and loving atmosphere during our program. If you have musical or artistic talents, you are invited to share these as well.
Time: Three hours per week (5:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesdays)
Expense: none
* Volunteer with Light and Peace Summer Program. Our junior volunteers will tell you what to do! We need people—especially men—to accompany children on trips, to help with arts projects, to play on the playground with them, and to help them worship. The Summer Program is in session for the first three weeks in July.
Time: It’s up to you. You can volunteer for a few afternoon shifts (noon to 3:00 or 3:00 – 6:00), or up to all afternoon, every day.
Expense: none.
* Provide a Summer Program lunch or supper. We need lunches every day for our staff (about 15 grownups and teens) and a supper team every Friday night. For lunch, you bring the food; we serve it. For supper, you are asked to serve and help clean up.
Time: Lunch – shopping, preparation, and drop-ff time. Food should be dropped off by noon.
Supper – three hours (5:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday) to set up, serve and clean up, plus shopping, cooking and travel time.
Please allow for Friday afternoon highway traffic if you are coming from out of town, especially if you come on I-95. .
Expense: varies, based on menu. About $40 for lunch, $150 for dinner.
* Volunteer with Saturday Mustardseed Club. Greet children accompanying their families to St. Paul & St. James’ Loaves & Fishes food closet. Chat with the children, read a book aloud, draw or play with puppets, help children choose books to take home. Spanish language skills especially helpful!.
Time: about 90 minutes (9:15 to 10:45 am) on Saturday morning.
Expense: none
* Make a gift in kind to the Children’s Mission. We will gladly accept gifts of books, toys, and supplies. Please click on the links for specific guidelines for gifts in kind.
Time: Just drop them off! But please call ahead (203-785-8248).
Expense: However much you choose!
* Contribute financially to the Children’s Mission. Except for some income from parent fees and royalties on our methodology, we are funded entirely by grants and donations. Your contribution will help us continue to provide high-quality programs to the children and families of New Haven, and to empower others to open new programs.
* $25 will buy art supplies, toys, games and other activities for one child for one month of our afterschool program.
* $50 will provide ten children with admission to the Connecticut Children’s Museum. Trips are an important extra for both the Summer Program and the Afternoon Club.
* $70 will pay a Summer Program staff member for one day. Many of our summer staff members are young adults, educators looking for summer work, or parents looking for jobs that let them stay with their kids. Unlike many children’s programs, we pay our staff what they deserve for their hard work and dedication, and provide paid training.
* $75 will provide one tank of gas for our vans (at October ’07 prices). Many children rely on the vans to get to our programs, and to church on Sunday mornings.
*$75 will give one child a scholarship for a week of Summer Program. Thanks to the annual generosity of the City Missionary Association of New Haven, we are able to set our fees at one half the actual cost. We ask families to prayerfully discern how much they can contribute to their child's costs.
* $120 will buy snacks for one week of Light and Peace Summer Program or two weeks of Mustardseed Afternoon Club.
* $150 will buy six high-quality, durable balls for healthy exercise on the playground or shooting hoops indoors on rainy days.
* $200 will give one child a scholarship for a month of Mustardseed Afternoon Club.
* $225 will give one child a scholarship to the entire Summer Program.
* $450 will buy materials and supplies for our entire summer program.
* $500 will buy toys and play equipment for one year.
* $1,000 will provide all our office supplies for one year.
* $1,800 will give one child a scholarship for a year of Mustardseed Afternoon Club.
* $2,000 will provide maintenance and repairs to one of our vans for one year.
* $2,500 will pay for printing and publicity for one year.
* $4,500 will provide insurance for one of our vans for one year. Having use of these vans is absolutely critical to our programs.
* $5,000 will pay the wages of one of our program assistants for Mustardseed Afternoon Club for one school year.
* $9,000 will pay our rent for one year.
* $10,000 will cover the cost of our Summer Program.

| "As a priest of an “evangelical” church, I understand evangelism to be the proclamation of the gospel in word and deed. Your program addresses and combines the two types of evangelism which I see as crucial to a witness to Christ today. You are not only concerned with the exigencies of poor families, but you also take seriously teaching the children the love of God in Christ through word and deed. This is key to my own commitment to the program. Your program is a shining example of what the church should be in its witness to Christ in our cities today."   - The Rev. Kathryn Greene-McCreight, member of our Steering Committee |
